New sign painting up for Naab Machinery Sales in Blaine, MN

The business owner at Naab Sales Corp. was interested in having the company's information hand-painted on the back of their garage doors so that when they photographed their machines for online sales, their info could be seen in the background. A great/practical way to reach their customers! A hand-painted sign can offer your business a level of sophistication and charm that cannot be captured in vinyl alone, reflecting to your clients that you care about details and will take a hands-on approach to the service they receive.

Completed sign painting for Naab Machinery Sales in Blaine, MN

Here are individual pictures of the four garage doors I painted for Naab Machinery Sales in Blaine, MN. Each door took about two days to complete. I painted the yellow letters first, then the red cast shadow. On the last day, I also painted varnish over the text to help protect it in the long term (MN weather can be very extreme - both hot AND cold). 1-Shot Paint was used for the painting. 24” x 168” each…

New sign painting up for Naab Machinery Sales, Blaine, MN

New sign painting up for the good folks at Naab Machinery Sales. As you can see in the images below the texture of the doors makes the line work challenging. You have to really charge the brush to get the right coverage… but not too much! 😂 It’s a bit of a juggling act.

I’ve got three more garage doors in the works so more to come!

Large mural unveiled of the artist Prince in downtown Minneapolis.

I went to the Prince block party after work on Thursday night to check out the unveiling of his mural by the artist Hiero Veiga. I had been watching it come to life these last few weeks and I was curious to see how it turned out since the weather here has been questionable these last few days. Lots of rain and wind. The mural is about 100 feet tall on a wall near Ramp A by on the southwest corner of First Avenue and Eighth Street…

New hand painted sign

New sign painting on printmaking paper, “Possibly the most…”, 22x36”, enamel and acrylic paint

Inspired by issue #87 of the comic book title, Fantastic Four, by the illustrious Stan Lee and Jack Kirby- (I just read a book about that guy too) 🤷🏽‍♂️

It is weird what motivates people. I just had to get this painting done last night before the new year. There is no immediate need but… I don’t know, it just seemed important.

2022 has now arrived!

Looks like this might…. be the last sign for the year. But there is one more week left so….

New work - Fairground food signs on paper

Snow Cones, 18.75 x 26.25”, enamel and acrylic paint on Rives printmaking paper.

The fairground food signs continue! This particular piece was a bit tricky because of the color transition. Most snow cones are two to three colors but for this I decided to go with the whole spectrum. The outline was a big help because I could hide the paint runoff. It gave me some space..
Yellow and purple are so transparent it took awhile to build up the colors but in the end their misgivings helped add to the rawness of the work. Plus, I don’t see the point in making things too clean. I guess that is a reaction to when I used to work for Takashi Murakami.

New work - Fairground food signs on paper

Onion Rings, 18.75 x 26.25”, enamel and acrylic paint on Rives printing paper.

The carnival food signs continue! It is always a balancing act as to whether or not I want to add a graphic to the text. Obviously for this one it didn’t seem necessary but…
The colors I went with reminded me of a Melvins shirt I used to wear in the 90’s. I got it for free when their label was promoting their album in Gainesville, FL… useless knowledge for sure but I thought I would put it out there anyway. Ha!

New sign painting on a scrap piece of wood

New hand painted sign on a scrap piece of wood; small one this time… 6.5 x 4.5”. Inspired by text I saw on an Oatly milk carton, (as I drink their product everyday when I pour milk into my coffee).

So that is one interpretation, but I must say that things have been rather dramatic lately so maybe that’s the other inspiration.
